ApexRMS and BurnP3+ at Wildland Fire Canada 2026

The Wildland Fire Canada Conference + Canadian Smoke Forum returns to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, October 19th–23rd, 2026, bringing together wildland fire management agencies, Indigenous knowledge holders, scientists, and practitioners from across Canada and beyond. This year, ApexRMS’s Systems Ecologist Leonardo Frid will lead a workshop and two talks over the course of the conference.
ApexRMS sessions at Wildland Fire Canada 2026
Kicking off the first day of the conference, Leonardo will co-instruct a workshop, BurnP3+: Advancing Wildfire Hazard Assessment with a Multi-Model Simulation Framework, alongside Chris Stockdale of Natural Resources Canada’s Northern Forestry Centre. Through a live case study, the workshop will introduce burn probability modeling using BurnP3+, an open-source tool co-developed and maintained by the Canadian Forest Service and ApexRMS. Built as a SyncroSim package, BurnP3+ can incorporate fire growth models such as Prometheus and FireSTARR, and participants will leave ready to apply the tool in their own work.
Leonardo will also present Integrating FireSmart Fuel Treatments and Bioenergy Harvesting in Remote Yukon Communities: A Wildfire Burn Probability Modelling Approach, co-authored with Nicolas Mansuy of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). The talk will explore how pairing fuel treatment and bioenergy harvesting can reduce wildfire risk while easing diesel dependence in remote communities. Using BurnP3+ and the FireSTARR fire growth model, the team built burn probability models for Watson Lake and Teslin, Yukon, testing scenarios from non-burnable fuel breaks to slash-based treatments. Non-burnable breaks reduced burn probability around both communities, while slash left in place increased it, underscoring the importance of thorough removal and ongoing maintenance.
In a third session, Leonardo will present A Cloud-Based Tool for Wildfire Risk Assessment and Scenario Exploration in Indigenous and Remote Communities, co-presented with Todd Bailey, Director of Land Stewardship and Environment at Swan River First Nation (SRFN), and co-authored with Trevor Wiens of Apropos Information Systems. The talk will share progress from a four-year project to build a cloud-based wildfire risk assessment platform with SRFN, developed under the Wildfire Resilient Futures Initiative funded by NRCan. Built on SyncroSim’s BurnP3+ and ST-Sim packages, the platform is designed to allow non-technical users to forecast current and future wildfire risk under alternative land management scenarios. Its design has been shaped throughout by a User Needs Assessment Workshop with SRFN community members and Knowledge Keepers.
ApexRMS is grateful to its collaborators on this work, and we look forward to connecting with colleagues from across Canada’s wildfire research and management community in Saskatoon this October.
