Empowering groups with better wildfire modeling tools

Instructors and participants gathered for a group photo at the BurnP3+ wildfire risk modeling course in Kelowna, BC.

This past fall, ApexRMS team members contributed to two major wildfire modeling events, sharing tools and partnerships that support safer, more informed wildland fire planning across Canada and beyond.

Wildfire Summit 2025

ApexRMS participated in the 18th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit and the 7th Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire Conference, held October 20–23, 2025 in Calgary, Alberta. The event brought together researchers, practitioners, Indigenous partners, and fire management professionals to advance wildfire safety, decision-support, and community resilience.

To kickoff the conference, our team members, Leonardo Frid and Katie Birchard, alongside the Canadian Forest Service’s (CFS) Chris Stockdale, led a two-hour workshop introducing wildfire burn-probability modeling using the BurnP3+ package in SyncroSim. Participants were guided through the fundamentals of burn probability modeling and explored how BurnP3+ can be applied within SyncroSim for scenario-based wildfire risk assessment and decision-support.

This BurnP3+ workshop was followed up by a presentation by Leonardo and a project collaborator, Todd Bailey (Swan River First Nation), that showcased the development an easily accessible wildfire modeling tool to assess and communicate wildfire risk around the Swan River First Nation community. The presentation highlighted the importance of co-developed tools that reflect community priorities, support local planning, and make advanced wildfire modeling outputs more transparent and usable for decision-makers.

BurnP3+ Course

Building on momentum from the conference, ApexRMS co-hosted a three-day BurnP3+ course from November 12–14, 2025 at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) in Kelowna, BC. The workshop provided intensive, hands-on training for wildfire modelers and practitioners.

Instructed by Leonardo, Katie, Chris Stockdale, and Denyse Dawe (CFS), the course welcomed 25 participants from across Canada and the United States, including students, researchers, consultants, and industry professionals. The continued refinement of our tools over the years was highlighted by their ease of use in the workshop, and we were excited to see participants collaborate on their personal BurnP3+ projects in smaller breakout groups.

Supporting Better Wildfire Decisions

Together, these events reflect ApexRMS’s ongoing commitment to delivering practical wildfire modeling tools, training new users, and partnering with communities to support locally relevant risk assessment. We’re grateful to all participants and collaborators and look forward to continuing this work with agencies, researchers, and Indigenous partners across the wildland fire community.
